Geological Design and Explorations

Geology Department of CRS&GIS “Terra” provides services in the field of geology of solid minerals and hydrocarbons in the following main directions:

  • Geological interpretation of RSD materials;
  • Design for construction of onshore and offshore deep oil wells;
  • Design for production testing oil and gas wells;
  • Design for deep injection of industrial drains;
  • Design for deep injection of cuttings;
  • Preparation of programs and report on subsurface monitoring;
  • Development of feasibility study for grades of minerals;
  • Current estimate of hydrocarbons and solid minerals reserves, and professional support of projects with their defense at the State Reserves Commission;
  • Preparation of programs for geological engineering surveys onshore and offshore;
  • Design for geological prospecting for hydrocarbons and solid minerals exploration and production;
  • Independent expert review for reports on estimate of hydrocarbons and solid minerals reserves, feasibility study of grades and reviewing of projects for geological prospecting works and reports;
  • Reports on recovery of territories.

In the process of creating cartographic materials, the specialists of geology department work in close interaction with GIS- specialists and specialists in remote sensing data processing.

In recent times, geological surveys based on RSD materials gain more relevance. Among various satellite Earth remote sensing systems, the following space systems: Landsat 7, Landsat 8, Terra (Aster) and WorldView-3 can be singled out for studies of multi-scale geological structures.
The demand for space images to solve geological tasks is attributable to their:

Objectivity - each space image (RSD) is a document which objectively reflects the state of terrain at the time of survey.
Relevance - RSD materials can be acquired for various dates, including ordered survey which provided for 1 -3 days to several weeks.
Large Scale - modern RSD devices allow one to shoot considerable size areas with quite high level of detail.
Exterritoriality - survey sites are in no way attached to the state and territorial boundaries thus no permit is required for surveys.

Application of advanced technologies using multispectral space images makes it possible to considerably reduce cost of forecast and exploration works, to raise geological prospecting works on qualitatively new level for account of localization of minerals search areas. Images help to acquire new information and to detail available geological and structural information to update geological maps and localize areas of forecast surveys and sites of minerals search.
It is also expedient to use remote sensing materials in the assessment of resource potential of the territories because they are available and cost rather low.

Most relevant applications of RSD:

  • under conditions of hard-to-reach territories difficult for onshore surveys;
  • when simultaneous observation is needed for different sites;
  • continuous study of sizable territories.

Application of RSD materials in mapping goes in two directions:

  • mapping of geological structures that is traditional;
  • study of spectral properties of minerals and rocks.

Space images help to single out tectonic faults which control ore bearing in large regions as a whole and mineralization of certain type within specific areas. Numerous lineaments serve as good basis to identify «hidden» crustal disturbances. Various ring nuisances in landscapes show positions of mantle «plumes», crust centers of tectonic-magmatic activation, granite-gneissic domes in basement, volcanic genesis structures which are spatially and genetically connected to ore areas, clusters and fields of various ores. Typical changes in color and tone of ground surface on space images as well as distinctions in the vegetation cover structure are shown from sites of thermal and hydrothermal reaming.

To date through the efforts of three departments of the Company, a work scope was performed in processing and interpretation of space images to obtain geological information on 15 tablets of scale 1: 200 000 territory of Kazakhstan where GDP-200 works are carried out.

Similar works were performed in the project «Data Processing of Medium Resolution Remote Sensing, Vectorization of Geological Maps in Geological Exploration Territories» for KazZinc. In this work, remote sensing data were used from WorldView-3 satellite, with 0.3 m resolution for structural interpretation. SWIR spectral ranges with resolution of 7.5 m were successfully used for mapping of rocks variety. Some results of their processing are presented as masks of rock varieties.

Staying strong in the pursuit of the goals set and having the advanced domestic and foreign technologies, the team of highly skilled professionals of CRS & GIS “Terra” seeks to expand the range of its services in the field of subsurface resources use and to improve their quality.
